Boxed, Unboxed, or Digital: Which edition is right for you?
Our mission at Egg & Spoon Games is simple: Get everyone playing. That means we make great games that are suitable for your most foul-mouthed friends and for your dear nana; that cater for maths whizzes or wordsmiths. No matter where you are or who you game with, there is an Egg & Spoon game for you.
To that end, we offer three different ways to buy our games: Boxed, Unboxed, and Digital. Whether you’re buying a gift for someone special or getting yourself a payday treat, we’ve got something to suit everyone (and every budget, too!) But which edition is right for you?
Our Editions Explained
Boxed Edition
Boxed Editions are our premium offering. It’s as close as you can get to popping down to the shop and picking one up off of the shelves.
Professionally printed cards come in an exclusive box, with all the instructions you need to get started playing immediately. They’re ideal for collectors and card game enthusiasts as Boxed Editions are the only ones that are “officially” recognised as having a print run.
As an indie card game company, we create to order. As such, you'll need to pre-order your Boxed Editions for a deposit of £9.99. Once we've got enough pre-orders, we'll do a print run and ask you to pay the remaining £15 to confirm your order. If it takes more than a month, we'll send you an special version of our Unboxed Edition to say thank you!
Boxed Editions are made and manufactured in the UK, and only available to UK addresses at the moment.
Unboxed Edition
Unboxed Editions are a reimagination of what card games could be. Often called print-and-play card games, an Egg & Spoon Unboxed Edition comes with all your cards in a template, an instructional video, and a great deal of fun. It’s really simple and great fun putting your cards together - fantastic if you’re looking to learn a new skill, or if you need to reprint any of your cards.
Environmentally friendly, these games have a reduced carbon footprint as we don’t print any excess; and that means they’re also great for your budget-conscious gamers who want to try something new. As we make a saving on materials and postage, we pass these straight on to you - so it’s often up to 80% cheaper.
The Unboxed Edition is delivered to your email address within 24 hours and takes around 1-2 hours to put together, so you can give your game night an egg-tra special twist.
Digital Edition
The Digital Edition is all the files you need to play an Egg & Spoon game online. We'll provide you with great ideas for how to play across a range of online tools, as well as all the files to import the game into Tabletop Simulator*. Alongside these, you’ll receive an instructional video for how to upload and add your assets to the game, and how to save the game to get started faster next time.
The fastest way to play an Egg & Spoon game, the Digital Edition is delivered within an hour of your order and is ideal if you run a remote games night or want to play with friends from afar.
(*Egg & Spoon Games is not affiliated with Tabletop Simulator - we just think it’s an excellent bit of kit and highly recommend it!)
Things to Consider
Playstyle and Preferences
There’s no single correct way to play games, and I love that technology has moved on far enough so that we can enjoy quality time with each other whether that’s over Discord or in-person.
The biggest decision is whether you want to get a bit crafty and make your own deck through the Unboxed Edition, or whether you want the guaranteed professional quality finish to your cards from the Boxed Edition.
You might also want to consider the Digital Edition if you’ve already got Tabletop Simulator, or fancy picking it up, and you and your gaming buddies are distributed far apart.
There’s no one right way to play. At Egg & Spoon Games, our game design process means that we make every game in Tabletop Simulator first, and then do our testing with a real deck - so we don’t really have a preference between Unboxed, Boxed, and Digital.
What I can say is that manufacturing your own deck - with the various successes and failures that come along with it - is incredibly satisfying and becomes easier the more you do it. As a first-time buyer, I would definitely recommend trying out an Unboxed Edition.
Intended Use
If you’re giving the game to someone, it might be best to get them something they don’t have to build themselves. Outside of LEGO, I’ve found that gifts which require assembly really do need to go to a specific kind of person. To that end, the Boxed Edition would be your friend and would be an amazing gift for a card game enthusiast.
If you know you go through lots of cards or have a track record of losing them, damaging them, or otherwise, it might be handy to have all the files you need on-hand so you never need to disrupt your game night again. Unboxed Editions are a lifesaver in these situations!
Conclusion
Card games are all about preferences, and we are so glad to offer Egg & Spoon Games customers the choice to play however they feel best. Whether you just want to pick up a pack and start playing, want a great activity and the satisfaction of manufacturing your own deck, or love to hang out with your friends online, we can help.
Ultimately, whichever way you choose to purchase, we can guarantee one thing: You will have fun!
